Hornbill Habitat Restoration: Safeguarding the Western Ghats

The Sahyadri Sankalp Society is leading a critical conservation initiative in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, to restore hornbill habitats and protect their dwindling populations. This project focuses on habitat restoration, artificial nest box installation, and community-based awareness programs to ensure the long-term survival of three threatened hornbill species. Through scientific research and local engagement, this initiative aims to create a sustainable future for both biodiversity and communities in the Western Ghats.

Executive summary

Ratnagiri district in Maharashtra, part of the Western Ghats, is a crucial conservation area for hornbills, which are vital seed dispersers and flagship species for forest ecology. The area is home to three hornbill species Great Hornbill, Malabar Pied Hornbill, and Malabar Grey Hornbill. However, continuing deforestation, habitat fragmentation, and degrading private forests threatens the survival these hornbills due to their dependence on mature trees for nesting and food.

The region comprises deep valleys, sacred groves, and tropical forests, serving as crucial wildlife corridors linking Chandoli Wildlife Sanctuary and Sahyadri Tiger Reserve. More than 50% of Ratnagiri is forested, but only 0.8% is government-owned with no formal protection; ongoing clearing and conversion to monoculture plantations exacerbate habitat loss.

Sacred and community-owned groves, rich in large mature trees and fruiting species, are among the last strongholds for hornbill nesting. Yet the area faces significant threats from anthropogenic pressures like logging, mining, and forest fires. There is an urgent need for both short- and long-term interventions.

This initiative aims to:

  • Identify and protect hornbill nest sites.
  • Restore and enhance hornbill habitats by plantation of food plants and nesting trees.
  • Establish a nursery of food and nesting plants suitable for hornbills
  • Introducing artificial nest boxes to assist nesting of birds.
  • Foster long-term species survival via community engagement and awareness.

By prioritizing habitat restoration and local community support, this project seeks to secure the future of hornbills and associated biodiversity in one of the ecologically sensitive landscapes.

About the NGO

The Sahyadri Sankalp Society was founded with a strong passion to safeguard the sensitive ecosystems of the Sahyadri region. Their journey began with passionate group of ecologists, researchers, and community leaders who recognized the urgent need to protect the unique biodiversity of this area, while ensuring that the local communities could thrive alongside nature.

The Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are known for their rich biodiversity, harboring thousands of species of plants, animals, and birds, many of which are found nowhere else in the world. However, the growing threats of deforestation, climate change, and unsustainable agricultural practices have put these natural wonders at risk.

Driven by a commitment to make a tangible difference, the organization was established to focus on conservation, sustainable development, and community empowerment. They hand in hand with youth, women and farmers in local villages, educational institutes and government agencies and other stakeholders to create impactful, long-term solutions that benefit both nature and people.
